A historic town hall, which has been featured in The Crown and the upcoming Bohemian Rhapsody film, is being transformed into a new destination, with the refurbishment of the Town Hall and a collection of new homes.
The much loved 1930s landmark, Hornsey Town Hall has hosted a plethora of stars in its lifetime, being used as a filming for many TV, film, theatre productions and adverts over the years.
Mostly famously, it was used as a filming spot for the new Bohemian Rhapsody, film all about Freddie Mercury and Queen, due to be released this month. Many years ago, Queen played at the venue before becoming famous in February 1971, as a supporting band, when they were still called The Queen.
Combining history, culture and modern living, the iconic Grade II Listed former civic headquarters in the heart of Crouch End is undergoing meticulous restoration by leading international developer Far East Consortium, into a new desirable address.
Built in 1935 to house Hornsey Borough Council, it is one of the earliest examples of modernist architecture in Britain.
The hall’s modernist, bespoke architecture was pioneering at its time, designed by New Zealander Reginald Harold Uren FRIBA. The town hall was his first major commission in Britain and one of the first large modernist designs constructed in the country, showing influences of Dutch and Swedish architecture of the period.
In its new life, Hornsey Town Hall will provide an extremely rare opportunity to live in a new development, steeped in history, with many of the original features remaining untouched.
The development will provide a wide range of community spaces, including a new arts centre, which will provide first class performance arts, co-working and flexible workspaces, restaurants and cafés, versatile event spaces.
A new hotel, operated by Dorsett Hospitality International will be situated within the original Town Hall building and 135 new studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments will be constructed in the grounds.
Ranging from studio apartments to three bedrooms, the new homes will be finished with floor-to-ceiling windows, underfloor heating throughout and chevron timber flooring which has been designed in keeping with the original flooring in the Town Hall.
Designer kitchens will include fully integrated appliances and state-of-the-art facilities. Bathrooms will feature chevron porcelain wall tiles, offering a contemporary take on Hornsey Town Hall’s modernist aesthetic.
“This represents an exciting opportunity to live in a building stepped in history, which has been captured in film forever,” says John Connolly, Head of UK Development at Far East Consortium. “Despite its new incarnation we are committed to honour this iconic building’s distinguished legacy, we are creating homes here that blend Hornsey Town Hall’s history with modern living and excellent amenities.”
Prices start from £499,950 for a one bedroom apartment and £699,950 for a two bedroom apartment. For further information contact the marketing suite on 020 3960 5888, email info@hornsey-townhall.co.uk
