‘Come and live in Guernsey, it’s a better, safer life’. The team at Locate Guernsey is focused on externalising the island’s appeal as an attractive, peaceful, convenient, corporately capable and safe place to live.
In going about our usual activities, frequently engaging those who also see additional value in the island’s fiscal position, little did we know that we’d face a situation where our borders would be closed, with air and sea links reduced dramatically, for the moment anyway.
The COVID19 crisis has not however dampened interest in Guernsey from those living elsewhere. Enquiries have continued to come, many prompted by the island’s approach to this crisis; ‘I wish I was there now, from what I can see it would be better to be locked down in Guernsey than anywhere else’ was one comment and reflected in all our ongoing ‘prospect care calls’.
A sense that we’ve been resilient is a powerful endorsement of Guernsey’s strategy and if there is to be benefit gained from this situation then it’s to emphasise how the island’s government and population have worked together to do all the right things, both to protect healthcare infrastructure and those at risk, dealing sensitively with the vulnerable in our community.
Led by our Chief Minister Gavin St. Pier, the island’s comprehensive and co-ordinated response to COVID 19 has been visible in regular live media briefings, where key leaders have provided direction and advice.
At each briefing we have heard from the Director of Public Health, as well as the President of Health & Social Care who have been joined by our Medical Director, the Chief Executive of the States of Guernsey and the Head of Law Enforcement.
These briefings have included questions fed in from the public so islanders have felt involved, informed and as safe as anyone could expect to feel in such extraordinary circumstances.
At the outset, Gavin St. Pier said “we’ve got this” and that mantra has proved to be the case. Although the reality of the adverse economic impact is clear, there are already strategies forming to ensure our recovery is as fast and effective as possible.
If we can show the same ‘Guernsey Together’ resolve in building a stronger future as has been evident throughout this crisis, Guernsey will remain quite simply one of the very best places in the world to live.
