Neal is a figurative sculptor, living and working in Norfolk. After training at the Royal College of Art in London he first worked as a designer at Royal Worcester Porcelain Co Ltd, before teaching at Hornsey College of Art (later Middlesex University). As a designer he won the Duke of Edinburgh’s Prize, and as an academic he was made Emeritus Professor.
Throughout these careers he continued to make sculpture, and since 1990 he has worked full time as a sculptor, working independently and to commission. His work is predominantly modelled in clay, either as unique ceramic pieces or to be moulded and cast in ceramic, bronze or resin.
His figure work ranges from small domestic pieces to large scale public or garden sculpture. At whatever scale and in whatever medium the sculpture is to be, Neal works closely with the client, listening to his or her ideas and building them into the creative process. He recently created a group of three life size figures carried out in the West End, and commissioned by the Grosvenor Estates. Here the site and its associations played a major part in the final design, as did the fruitful discussions with the client.
Portrait sculpture is carried out working directly from the sitter, without any preliminary drawing or photography, usually in the sitter’s home, or in the artist’s studio in Norfolk. The portrait can be in either terra cotta or bronze, the choice is the client’s.
As well as being a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, he is also a council member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors.
A range of his work is shown on his website www.nealfrench.co.uk
He would be very happy to discuss client requirements, ideas and potential commissions.
