CRIA is a woman owned beauty and wellness start-up, based in Austin, Texas. The founder, an anthropologist by training, was doing a diary project about 5 years ago, looking at her father’s diaries to understand how men construct their public selves via a private document. In one of his diaries, she chanced upon a scramble of numbers at a top of a page that made no sense. So, she asked her mother, who immediately exclaimed, “There it is!” And sure enough, “it” turned out to be the formula for what is now CRIA. The founder’s father was a biochemist, and her mother is a homeopathic doctor. Together, they created the formula almost 20 years ago to help her patients with hair loss. But her father, the quintessential scientist, “forgot” where he wrote the formula and as a result it was “lost,” only for the founder to “find” it serendipitously two decades later. She subsequently gave up academia and launched CRIA.

Her mission was to not only honor her parents’ perseverance and hard work in creating a minimalist, 100% organic formula for hair care but also shift the current hair loss paradigm that is premised on shame. People often get shamed into doing their body wrong for the sake of growing hair that never lasts.
