Growing up in a family of Cuban artists, Christina Villa finds inspiration from her proud cultural and familial roots. “I chose the name ‘Atrevida’ for my studio because it means to be brave and bold in Spanish,” Christina explains. “The word reflects how I view my art and my approach to life.”
An emerging Cuban-American artist based in New York City, Christina creates soulful abstract watercolour paintings that have an enduring interaction with light. To create the rich interplay between colours, she uses a self-taught technique consisting of organic colour blends, textures, and metallics.
Her clients have described her work as “magical,” “mesmerising,” “imaginative,” and “meditative.” ‘Each piece responds to light in a way that’s unique to the painting,” Christina says. “I want it to take each viewer on an independent journey.”
In addition to her paintings, Christina also produces ‘Sedas Atrevidas,’ a line of limited-run, seasonal silk scarves. Like her art, each one-of-a-kind scarf explores the dynamics of various colours, translating to stunning wearable art.
Her work was recently featured in Vanity Fair UK’s art edit ‘Worth A Thousand Words’ showcasing hand-picked emerging artists. Today she has a growing global client base of private collectors, who have purchased works from her collection or commissioned original pieces. With every piece sold, she donates a portion of the proceeds to a charity of the client’s choice.
Surrounded by the many forms of creative expression from her artistic family, Christina recognised the powerful influence of art at a young age. It guides her work today.
“I’m inspired by how we experience colours and the emotion they evoke,” Christina says. “When I create my artwork, I strive to share the joy that painting gives me with the rest of the world.”
