Ambera

Ambera is a new retirement living concept based on affordable homes, extensive shared facilities, community spirit, and an active lifestyle. The company is based in Oslo, Norway, with subsidiaries in Spain and plans to expand to most of Western Europe.

The first Ambera project is being developed in conjunction with Desert Springs Golf Resort and Spa, only a short two-and-a-half-hour flight from Northern Europe, and a scenic 50-minute drive from Almeria International Airport. Alicante and Murcia airports are within driving distance, giving you the chance to see even more of the beautiful Spanish countryside. Take in Almeria’s unique desert climate, stunning scenery, and idyllic sandy beaches. Enjoy great food and endless options for things to see and do. Ambera offers villas and condominiums at various price points. Our goal is to offer luxury retirement living on an ordinary retirement budget.

The story of Ambera began in 1995 when our founder, Jan Olav Frestad, visited Sun City Lincoln Hills for the very first time. In America, retirement homes based on affordable homes, extensive shared facilities and social activity have been around for decades, but to a Norwegian like Jan Olav, the concept was completely new.

Back home, he had watched as friends and relatives became isolated and bored during retirement. In Sun City, people were connecting with each other and enjoying life. A seed was planted in his mind: “What if my friends and I could spend our retirement like this? What if there was a community like this back in Europe?” The dream of Ambera was born.

Inspired, Jan Olav returned to Norway and began his career as a real estate developer. Determined to build projects that brought people together and encouraged positive change, the future Ambera founder built dozens of projects. With each new project, his conviction that how we live can be improved by where we live grew stronger. It became clear that just like Americans in Sun City, Europeans want to know the people around us – we want to be a part of a community, and we want to spend our days doing something meaningful. This becomes even more important when we retire.

After 20 years of research, experience and networking, Jan Olav teamed up with international real estate experts Malko Müller-Tyl and Alejandro Crespo, and began working on his biggest project yet – Ambera.
