Walking through the cobbled courtyard and surrounded by the beautiful converted buildings, you could be a whole lot further than the mere 45minutes from London. The main hotel is a stunning timber framed building and we were warmly received. We were extremely pleased to find ourselves staying in a courtyard suite which almost had the feeling of a private dwelling rather than a hotel due to the quiet surroundings. Inside, the room was cleverly decorated, contemporary with a traditional twist and a nod to the local craftsmanship of High Wycombe with the comfortable large balloon backed chair. The huge roll top bath in the corner of the room did nothing to detract from the space around the comfortable bed.
The restaurant back in the main building delivered slick service with a smile. We were eager to see what our choices would bring as there was involvement in the restaurant set-up involving chef Atul Kochhar. The Tiger prawn starter didn’t disappoint - an Asian influence that was a hit both with myself and my wife. They have, in my opinion, played a trump card when it comes to their beer selection with Rebellion ale, which is relatively local brew from Marlow on tap. They also offer wine by the glass which we were told, was on tap. On tap? Unusual we thought, but not an issue in terms of flavour - a bold, fruity number which didn’t overpower the food. The amuse bouche was delicious, a burnt Cauliflower with an almond pot of silkiness. My beef Wellington was a treat - the beef had a rich, succulent taste, something that can be lacking with beef fillet compared to other cuts. As for puddings - the chocolate fondant was a chocolate lovers’ ideal friend for the closing stages of the evening. Heavy on the chocolate and delivered in a nice warm hug.
Breakfast had something for everyone and was again delivered with the same attentive service as the previous evening. We opted for the full English which was elevated by a wonderful sliver of black pudding. Better still it was a leisurely affair – not staff rushing the delivery a joy to simply graze at our own pace.
We were blessed with a lovely morning and after check-out had a chance to wander through the high street. All told - a thoroughly charming stay in an equally charming town.
