Some changes to the Portuguese Nationality Law were approved on March 5th, 2023. These changes, designed to enhance the integrity and fairness of the nationality acquisition process, have brought about several legislative modifications.

The criterion of non-involvement in terrorism-related activities has been extended. If you seek Portuguese nationality, you must also avoid violent and highly organised criminal activities.
- The collection of biometric data has become part of the nationality application process, to guarantee the accuracy of the information. This data can be used to issue a citizen's card if nationality is granted. If the application is denied, the data is deleted after the appeal period or final decision.
- Nationality acquisition processes can be suspended if you are subject to UN or EU sanctions.
- Obtaining nationality by filiation can be requested after reaching the age of majority, provided the filiation is established by a judicial process or recognition within three years of the final decision.
- The period of legal residence required to apply for nationality by naturalisation is now counted from when the application for a temporary residence permit is made, not just from when the document is issued. This amendment has significant impact on those waiting for Golden Visa residence permits for long periods, since the waiting period counts for the 5 residency years required to apply for nationality.
Also, the requirements for descendants of Sephardic Jews seeking Portuguese citizenship have been updated to ensure a fair and transparent process. They must have legally resided in Portugal for at least three consecutive or interspersed years. In addition, a government commission must approve their connection to the Portuguese Sephardic community.
