Art is not just something to be admired from afar, it can be tactile, emotional and extremely personal. No-one knows that better than Furrah Syed, who creates uniquely bespoke commissions by reading the auras and energies of her clients and incorporates these into her works.
Furrah Syed is an abstract artist who specialises in painting vibrant canvases with a range of textures using mainly acrylics and occasionally oil pigments.
Passionate about art from an early age, Furrah went on to study Fine Art and Textile Design along with Art History in London, before going in a different direction with a corporate career in Finance and Marketing. During a break to raise a family, while accompanying her husband on an overseas posting to India, Furrah's passion for creating art was reignited.
“Moving to Bangalore was an interesting chapter in my life; being immersed in the abundance of colours, flavours and surrounded by natural beauty was hugely inspirational,” she says. So it was not surprising that she found herself returning to her true calling and started to paint again.
Her India experience was to have a profound impact on many levels. Not only did it rekindle her artistic creativity and allow her to create a name for herself in the art world with a number of group shows and a successful solo show, but it also introduced her to something that changed everything. Her world – and her work – was redefined forever after an experience with Pranic Healing, a practice which uses energy exchanges to improve the life-force.
"The practice of Pranic Healing was an astounding concept, that I found actually works. It is similar to Reiki but without actual physical contact. Having learned about colour energies through Pranic Healing and subsequently becoming an Advanced Practioner, I also studied the actual science behind it," she explains.
Upon her return to UK 3 years later, Furrah established her art practice in London, and continued to exhibit internationally and undertake commissions from her growing client list.
Her ongoing research led Furrah to devise and develop an Art Appreciation Workshop for the Blind and Partially Sighted. She conducted a global study of the energies of colour by delivering this workshop at many International institutions, including The Museum of Contemporary Arts in Sydney and MOMA Wales.
"The findings from this study were fascinating, and encouraged me to further explore the idea that aspects of people's personalities can be represented using colour energies" says Furrah. She continues to use this valuable knowledge and experience in her art practice to create interesting abstracts and also offer her clients the option to commission personalised, bespoke pieces.
The process of working with clients can range from choosing one of Furrah's original works that accommodates a client's concept, complying with their preference of size, colour and texture; or creating a bespoke piece tailored to fit the client's brief. The ultimate and unique offering is a bespoke abstract based on the client's very own colour frequencies and energy levels.
"My clients want something unique in their homes, and nothing is more interesting than a piece of art tailored to their own personal energy frequency,” she says. “For example, pieces can be bright and energetic, or they can be light and calming. It all depends on the individual, which makes for a very exciting experience” she adds.
The response to her work has been positive, with friends and families of Furrah's clients responding to the unique work and commissioning her to create paintings from their own energies.
Furrah’s abstracts can be experienced in many unusual ways. They can be hung in any orientation which offers the viewer freedom to explore alternative aspects of the flows and shapes on the canvas. She deliberately signs only on the reverse of the paintings for this reason.
She subtly uses metallic paints to highlight the dramatic effect the changing light has on her works. She says: "The colours, and even the images you see, alter according to the way the light lands on the canvas. It's amazing how different the pieces look from morning to night."
The works can also be appreciated using the sense of touch, liberating the viewer to 'literally' feel the flow of strokes and textures on the canvas; thus adding a new dimension to enjoying her abstracts.
All these aspects of Furrah’s approach make for a very unique and interactive art experience.
Furrah’s works are held in corporate and private collections in UK, USA, Canada, Europe, Bahrain, Dubai, India, Hong Kong and Australia.
