California coastal – US Southern charm – European Old-World architecture: SJK FineArt & Design combines diverse aesthetics to create spaces built for modern living, effused with warmth, energy, and hospitality, and preserving the historic character of buildings.
It’s no wonder Sara Jane Klingaman, founder of SJK FineArt & Design, considers her style eclectic. Growing up, she moved every few years – she’s lived in Philly, LA, Charleston SC, New Orleans, Atlanta, and Connecticut – today she is based in Amsterdam NL. Her dynamic sense of design has been influenced by each of the places she’s called home. She has a knack for bridging periods and blending styles. Her spaces are refined with a subtle elegance yet imbued with a playful energy.
Working primarily in the Netherlands for the last 8 years, today her work skews a bit more modern minimal and is admittedly cooler in palette. Look at any project and you will likely find a mix of design styles across eras and around the globe working in harmony. Whether restoring a 1920s bungalow, a late 1800s Queen Anne, or building new ground up, the most common attribute of her work is a respect for the architecture of the building and a desire to draw out the style of its owner. She has a keen sense of space and flow.
“I love to mix styles – balancing new trends with classic, timeless pieces. I adore texture. I aim to create aesthetically pleasing spaces that reflect the personalities of my clients. I approach design looking for a thoughtful balance between form and function. I encourage my clients to experiment with color and pattern but I’m not a maximalist. I work to create spaces that are contemporary, interesting and layered – but also spaces that will stand the test of time.”
Sara Jane draws on her background in studio art and her study of art and architectural history, along with her MBA in finance and time working in management consulting to provide her clients a full-service design/build experience.
Because she offers both interior design and project management, she’s able to provide her clients a wide complement of services – being proficient in Dutch doesn’t hurt either. For each new project, she assembles a team of resources based on the needs of the client. From planning and permits, through sourcing, to furnishings, styling, and fine art.
A home provides a window into the life and experiences of the owner – their passions, what is important, what inspires. They tell a story. A home should be comfortable, effortless. It should “feel” like home. My goal is to help my clients create dream homes that reflect their individuality.
